The first graduating class of the University of California at Merced launched a campaign for First Lady Michelle Obama to deliver their commencement address. Their campus-wide effort included 900 valentine cards, a YouTube video, and letters from the 537 members of the “Dear Michelle Campaign” on Facebook.

As we all know, their efforts paid off as the First Lady delivered the address today. In addressing the 517 graduates, she urged them “to fight through any fear or obstacles that stand in their way and do work that gives back to their communities”. The First Lady went on to say:

Think of the millions of kids around the world who will never have the chance to stand in your shoes. Kids who have lost the ability to dream.

The First Lady’s comments, however, about the University of Chicago are sure to cause a furor. I suspect that will be those who will consider her to be ungrateful for the 6-figure salary this institution paid her before her move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I also suspect that U of C officials have been kicking themselves about a would be alum they not only let get away – but didn’t even consider.

For those who may have missed the First Lady’s speech, here it is compliments of the Associated Press and YouTube.
